Tattoo & Piercing Aftercare
Practical guidance for helping a new tattoo or piercing heal well.
Fresh tattoo
Clean, light, protected.
- Follow your artist’s instructions for the original bandage or adhesive film and when to remove it.
- Wash your hands. Gently clean the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry.
- Apply only a thin layer of the product recommended by your artist.
- Do not pick or scratch. Avoid soaking, swimming, tanning, direct sun, and friction while healing.
- After healing, broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect the artwork from fading.
Fresh piercing
Saline and patience.
- Wash your hands before touching the area; otherwise leave the piercing alone.
- Use sterile wound-wash saline containing 0.9% sodium chloride and water.
- Do not twist or rotate jewelry. Gently dry with clean disposable gauze.
- Avoid alcohol, peroxide, harsh products, ointments, cosmetics, friction, and pressure.
- Avoid pools, lakes, oceans, and hot tubs while healing. See a qualified piercer for downsizing or jewelry changes.
Know when to get help
Do not wait on a serious concern.
Seek medical care for spreading redness, worsening pain or swelling, fever, red streaks, pus or foul-smelling drainage, an abscess, or persistent skin problems. If you suspect a piercing infection, speak with a healthcare professional before removing jewelry.
